This is my favorite photo of my mother, Gladys Gemskie and her little sister, Marie, daughters of Kate and George Gemskie of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Their father died in 1921, and in 1922 the girls were temporarily placed in Angel Guardian Home for Children. I believe the photo was taken while Gladys and Marie resided there, thus the uniformity in dress and hair. Is it any wonder that they both became hairdressers as young adult women?
