Leclaire was a cooperative village founded in 1890 that became a part of Edwardsville, Illinois in Madison County in 1934. The website above has over 400 pages of transcribed newspaper articles pertaining to Leclaire and Edwardsville residents including many not available through newspaperarchive or ancestry. Because the Leclaire experiment was unusual for it's time there were many reports on it's progress including articles that give short bios of employees, where they came from and how long they had been with the company. These articles were especially popular in the 1890s. By 1900 there were about 1000 residents, many from St. Louis, but others that came from as far away as New York. At least one family came to Leclaire after Bishop Hill failed. The Leclaire web site will be upgraded in the coming months to include more transcribed articles and links to sources on Leclaire's history. Friends of Leclaire can be contacted through their website and will use their resources to assist anyone needing genalogical help with Leclaire families at no charge.
The most commonly used site is Illinois State Archives, for about everything Illinois-related: deaths, marriages, soldiers, emancipation, etc.
